Research Notes on Codeine and Pregnancy
Codeine is typically only prescribed during pregnancy when the benefits to the mother clearly outweigh any potential risks to the fetus. Codeine has been listed as a category C drug by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, meaning its effects on a developing fetus have not been thoroughly studied. If you are pregnant, or wish to become pregnant, discuss this with your physician before using codeine or any medication containing codeine.1
Fast Facts:
- Studies performed in other countries have linked the use of codeine in pregnant women to fetal abnormalities such as heart and lung defects and cleft palate.2
- Codeine is known to pass through breast milk of nursing mothers.2
- Infants born to mothers who have repeatedly used codeine during the last weeks of pregnancy have been reported to have experienced withdrawal symptoms.1
