Research Notes on Cochlea
The inner ears auditory system is the cochlea. The cochlea is filled with fluid, vibrations cause tiny hairs to move within the fluid. The hairs then translate sound into nerve impulses that are sent to the brain.1
Fast Facts:
- From the Latin word for snail, which is from the Greek word kokhlias "snail, screw," from kokhlos "spiral shell".2
- Cochlea is a spiraled, hollow, conical chamber of bone.2
- Only mammals have the coiled cochlea.2
