Research Notes on Cocaine and Seizures
Cocaine use can provoke seizures, exacerbate a preexisting seizure disorder, or produce an ischemic hemorrhagic stroke that can lead to seizures.1 Once seizures develop, the patient begins to develop more severe seizures at smaller doses of cocaine.2 Anticonvulsants are effective for patients with both cocaine-induced and spontaneous seizures.3
Fast Facts:
- Chronic cocaine users are prone to serious illness and complications such as seizures.4
- The mode of cocaine intake greatly affects the seizure threshold.3
- Cocaine induced seizures are one of the earliest recognized neurological complications of cocaine abuse.5
