Research Notes on Clonazepam and Pregnancy
Clonazepam is only recommended for use during pregnancy when the benefits to the mother clearly outweigh any risks to the fetus. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has listed clonazepam as a category D medication. Human studies have indicated a risk of malformations in developing fetuses.1
Fast Facts:
- Infants born to mothers who have taken clonazepam late in the pregnancy have shown signs of breathing and feeding difficulties, as well as withdrawal symptoms.2
- Pregnant women are advised to take additional vitamin K the last month of pregnancy when using clonazepam.2
- Should you become pregnant while taking clonazepam, do not stop taking your medication, but do consult with your physician as soon as possible.2
- Clonazepam is often sold under the brand name Klonopin and is used to treat epilepsy and panic attacks.
