Research Notes on Clomipramine
Clomipramine is the generic name for the drug Anafranil. Clomipramine is an antidepressant from the tricyclic family of drugs. It is used to treat obsessive compulsive disorder, depression, panic attacks, narcolepsy, agoraphobia, premature ejaculation, chronic pain or bedwetting.
Fast Facts:
- It may take 2 to 3 weeks before the full effects of this medication are noticed.
- As is typical with the older tricyclic antidepressants, it has more side effects than the newer SSRI antidepressants.
- Some of the possible side effects are, drowsiness, dry mouth, nausea, vomiting, headache, stuffy nose, diarrhea, constipation, nervousness, decreased sexual ability, decreased memory or concentration, change in appetite or weight.
- Clomipramine works by increasing the amount of serotonin, a natural substance in the brain that is needed to maintain mental balance.
- Antidepressants have been known to increase the risk of suicidal thinking and behavior in children and adolescents.
