Research Notes on Citalopram and Weight Gain
Citalopram (brand name Celexa) is used to treat depression. This drug belongs to a group of medications called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs).1SSRIs work by increasing the serotonin activity in the brain. One of the side effects associated with citalopram is rapid weight gain.2

- Less than 10% of patients experienced weight gain with this drug.3
- In a controlled study, patients taking Celexa experienced a .5 kg (approximately 1lb) weight loss.4
- Contact your doctor if you are experiencing adverse reactions to this medication.
- Knowing which drugs can cause weight gain can help you and your doctor work out an exercise program or diet to counteract this side effect, according to psychiatrists.
