Research Notes on Citalopram and Tinnitus
Tinnitus is a possible side effect of citalopram (sold as Celexa (US) or Cipramil (UK)). Citalopram is an antidepressant, which can be given to people suffering from depression or from bipolar disorders. Tinnitus is a persistent ringing sound in the ears that occurs rarely as a side effect.1
Fast Facts:
- Tinnitus occurs in less than 1% of people taking citalopram.2
- If you experience tinnitus while taking citalopram, consult your physician immediately.2
- Other rare side effects include myalgia, convulsions, and malaise.1
- More common side effects of citalopram are anxiety, aggression, hallucinations, fast heart rate, or difficulty sleeping.1
