Research Notes on Citalopram and Swollen Eyes

Citalopram (Celexa) is a drug prescribed for the treatment of depression. Swelling of the eyes after taking citalopram is a rare side effect associated with an allergic reaction. Common side effects of citalopram are a decrease in sexual ability, blurred vision, lack of emotion, or skin rash. If more serious side effects such as swollen, itchy, or red eyes occur, consult a physician immediately.1

Fast Facts:

  • Citalopram should not be taken with any antidepressants classified as monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs).2
  • If you are currently taking MAO inhibitors, discontinue use and wait at least 14 days before taking citalopram.2
  • Alcohol consumption can increase the likelihood and severity of side effects.3
  • When you using citalopram, consult a doctor before taking any pain killers. 3
  • Patients are often concerned about antidepressant side effects. See how psychiatrists address the most frequently asked questions.
