Research Notes on Citalopram and Pregnancy
Citalopram (Celexa) should be used with caution if you are pregnant. There has been only limited research regarding possible effects of taking it during pregnancy.1 A Canadian study reported that the use of the drug during the latter part of the pregnancy had an increased risk of "poor neonatal adaptation syndrome," which included symptoms of jitteriness, irritability, eating and sleeping difficulties, convulsions, vomiting, and low blood sugar. These side effects were normally temporary and not life threatening.2
Fast Facts:
- In some women, possible risks of postpartum depression may be a greater concern than any negative effects of the antidepressant medication.1
- Infants exposed to SSRIs should be closely monitored for at least 48 hours after birth.3
- Major depression is one of the most common medical complications in pregnancy.4
- Patients are often concerned about using antidepressants during pregnancy. Read how psychiatrists respond to frequently asked questions.
