Research Notes on Citalopram and Hypomania
Citalopram should be used with caution in patients with a history of hypomania.1 Citalopram (sold under the brand name Celexa in the US and Cipramil in the UK) is an antidepressant drug used to treat depression associated with mood disorders.2 It has been shown to trigger sudden mood shifts in some patients with bipolar disorder.3
Fast Facts:
- Mania or hypomania has also been seen in a few patients with major affective disorders treated with other antidepressants.4
- High risk patients should be monitored closely while on this drug. If symptoms become present, seek medical advice immediately.5
- Citalopram should be discontinued if a patient enters a manic phase.4
- Patients are often concerned about antidepressant side effects. See how psychiatrists respond to frequently asked questions.
