Research Notes on Citalopram and Headache
Headache is a common side effect of taking citalopram (sold under the brand name Celexa in the US and Cipramil in the UK). Citalopram is used as an antidepressant for treating depression and other mood disorders. Other side effects include drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth, increased sweating, insomnia, cardiac arrhythmia, hallucinations, blood pressure changes, and nausea and/or vomiting.1 Patients are often concerned about antidepressant side effects. See how psychiatrists respond to frequently asked questions.
Fast Facts:
- Citalopram withdrawal can cause a headache. Your physician may need to slow down your rate of withdrawal from the drug. 2
- Adverse side effects of citalopram are generally mild and temporary.3
- Side effects usually occur during the first few weeks of treatment and subside as depression improves.3
