Research Notes on Citalopram Interactions

Citalopram has the potential to interact with a number of medicines. Some of these medicines include: aspirin, alcohol, cimetidine, ketoconazole, lithium, linezolid, metoprolol, monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), pimozide, SSRI or SNRI antidepressants, St. John's wort, tramadol, tricyclic antidepressants, triptans, tryptophan, and warfarin.1 Not every citalopram drug interaction is included here. Talk with your pharmacist or healthcare provider about any prescription or over-the-counter drugs you are planning to take, before starting citalopram, and if specific drug interactions with citalopram may apply to your condition.2

Fast Facts:

  • Some harmful effects associated with drug interactions include stomach bleeding, irregular heart rhythms, and serotonin syndrome.1
  • Do not start, stop, or change the dosage of any medicine before checking with your doctor or pharmacist first.3
  • Contact your health care provider if you experience any of these side effects.
