Cirrhosis of the Liver

Although most cases of cirrhosis are caused by alcoholism and hepatitis C, it can also result from hepatitis B, hemochromatosis, cystic fibrosis and many other disorders. Signs of cirrhosis may include easy bruising, yellowing of the eyes and skin, fluid in the abdominal cavity, swelling of the legs and feet, mental confusion, and weight loss. Symptoms may include fatigue, poor appetite, itching, and nausea.

Fast Facts:

  • Treatment depends upon the underlying cause or existing complications. For example, in patients with advanced cirrhosis, beta-blockers, lactulose, and diuretics are medications that help prevent gastrointestinal bleeding, mental confusion, and fluid accumulation.
  • Liver transplantation is considered in patients with signs of liver failure and may improve long-term survival.
