Cirrhosis is the severe scarring of the liver due to chronic injury caused by infections, heavy alcohol drinking or hepatitis.1 Diet modification to compensate for the impairment of the liver is necessary in processing of nutrients and eliminating wastes in the body. The best diet to manage cirrhosis is the heart-healthy diet, which includes limited intake of fats and salts, more protein foods, and no alcohol. It is essential that patients with cirrhosis consult with their physician or dietitian to determine their appropriate nutritional needs.2
