Research Notes on Chronic Pain and Nonsteroidal Antinflammatory Drugs


Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are available over-the-counter and by prescription to treat chronic pain. NSAIDs such as aspirin and ibuprofen work to relieve muscle aches and stiffness that are associated with diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis.1 NSAIDs can be taken as needed for chronic pain, or regularly to help build up resources in the body that provide pain relief.2

  • Prescription NSAIDs such as Celebrex are recommended when over-the-counter drugs have not been effective in managing chronic pain.1
  • Common side effects of using NSAIDs for chronic pain include heartburn, ulcers, and skin rashes.3
  • Do not use an over-the-counter NSAIDs for chronic pain for more than 10 days without consulting with your doctor.3
