Research Notes on Chronic Pain and Fibromyalgia


Fibromyalgia sufferers experience chronic pain in ways that no one else can understand. The pain tends to be all over the body, but may be felt most intensely in specific trigger points.1 This pain tends to not be relieved by medications. Many people feel as if their muscles have been overworked or pulled, regardless of activity. Common places for pain include: areas around the joints in the neck, shoulders, back, and hips.1 Fibromyalgia can appear or get worse after some sort of trauma. However, there often is no single event that triggers a person's symptoms.2 Fibromyalgia often presence as widespread pain, stiffness, fatigue, poor sleep, and cognitive difficulties. Other symptoms such as, anxiety and depression accompany this disease. If bad enough, fibromyalgia can impair daily activity.3

  • The pain of fibromyalgia is said to be caused from a glitch in the way the body perceives pain.1
  • Fibromyalgia occurs in approximately 2% of the population, with a higher prevalence in women.2
  • Trigger points (sometimes called tender points) most often appear at muscle tendon junctions.4
