Research Notes on Chronic Pain and Exercise

Exercise has been shown to help provide immediate relief and long-term benefits to those who suffer from chronic pain. Chronic pain patients typically find that short periods of exercise (five or six minutes) are more helpful in the initial days of starting an exercise program in order to avoid additional pain from sore muscles. It is important to speak with a physician before beginning any exercise plan.1

Fast Facts:

  • Chronic pain patients should consider water exercises if pain is experienced during weight-bearing exercises such as walking.2
  • Yoga is a gentle exercise that has been shown to decrease pain through meditation, and increase flexibility and strength.3
  • All patients should gently stretch before beginning to exercise. Chronic pain patients may find that a warm shower will help to loosen joints and muscles even more when combined with gentle stretching afterward.3
