Research Notes on Chronic Pain and Addiction
Medications that are used to alleviate the symptoms of chronic pain could possibly lead to an addiction. In recent years, there has been an increase in chronic pain sufferers becoming addicted to pain killers.1 Although there has been an increase in addiction, health care providers say there has also been an increase in people using prescription pain medications responsibly.1 Researchers are still working to determine what exactly leads some people to addiction while others never develop an addiction.2
Fast Facts:
- Warning signs of chronic pain addiction include an increase in pain medication use, feelings of depression, and a failure to make appointments with regular health care providers.3
- Most people who receive opioids for treatment do not become addicted. Most opioid users only use opioids on a short-term basis to gain control over their pain.2
- If you have a history of addiction to drugs or alcohol, you should let your doctor know. By doing so, your health care provider will be able to establish a treatment plan that is most effective for you.2
