Research Notes on Chronic Pain Syndrome

Chronic pain syndrome is when pain has lasted six months or more. It has many different causes, including physical and psychological factors. Due to the nature of this syndrome, doctors may have a hard time diagnosing and treating this condition.1 Chronic pain syndrome has often been diagnosed if pain does not go away in the reasonable time frame for healing. Some officials will diagnose chronic pain in as little as three months. One hurdle to overcome for health care professionals and patients, is that chronic pain does not respond well to therapies. It is hard to pinpoint what to do, because of the complex history and unknown etiology. It has been found that a multidiscipinary approach is beneficial.2

Fast Facts:

  • Stress or depression can cause chronic pain syndrome to flare up.1
  • Chronic pain syndrome often leaves people drug dependent, undergoing multiple surgeries, or allowing practitioners to perform questionable practices when promising quick cures.3
  • It is believed that about 35% of the people in the U.S. suffer from some sort of chronic pain.1
  • Women are more likely to report chronic pain than men.1
  • Many people with chronic pain also experience chronic anger, anxiety, and depression.3
