Research Notes on Chronic Pain Surgery
Chronic pain surgery may be considered after other therapies have proven ineffective in managing pain. Chronic pain surgery can provide relief, but the risks associated with the surgery may outweigh the benefits for you. Surgery can lead to permanent damage to your ability to distinguish between other sensations.1 Surgery can cause a different kind of pain for you as well.2
Fast Facts:
- Chronic pain surgery may prove to be only a temporary solution to your pain.2
- For severe chronic pain, your health care provider may recommend implanting a pain control device. You may be able to try a temporary device before surgery to see how effective the device would be.1
- Your health care provider may also recommend surgical sympathectomy to prevent the flow of pain signals.1
