Research Notes on Chromosome
Chromosomes are DNA -- sets of genetic instructions -- packaged into thread-like structures in the nucleus of each cell. Chromosomes are not visible in the cell's nucleus when the cell is not dividing, but during cell division the DNA becomes very tightly packed and is then visible under a microscope.
