Chorionic Villus Sampling is a genetic diagnostic test in which a sample of chorionic villi is drawn from the developing placenta to detect such genetic birth defects such as Tay-Sachs disease and Down Syndrome. The sample is drawn by inserting a fine needle into the abdomen, or by a small catheter into the vagina and through the cervix. It is usually performed between the 8th and 12th week of pregnancy.
