Research Notes on Cholesterol and Nuts
Studies show that certain types of nuts can significantly reduce bad cholesterol and reduce the risk of heart disease. Walnuts are especially good for lowering cholesterol because they contain a large amount of omega-3 fatty acids, which are known to lower triglycerides. Research shows that eating two handfuls of almonds per day can lower bad cholesterol by over nine percent. Because of their high fat content, Brazil nuts, macadamia nuts, cashews, and some varieties of pine nuts are not recommended by the FDA. Eating nuts that are very high in fat can lead to weight gain that could possibly erase any of the benefits they provided.1
Fast Facts:
- Studies show that eating at least one ounce of peanuts at least five times per week can reduce total cholesterol levels and triglyceride levels.2
- The fiber in nuts can lower cholesterol and possibly help prevent diabetes.3
- Nuts contain plant sterols, which are known to help lower cholesterol.3
