Research Notes on Cholesterol and Lipoproteins
Cholesterol travels in the blood in packages called lipoproteins. Just like oil and water, cholesterol, which is fatty, and blood, which is watery, do not mix. In order to be able to move in the bloodstream, the cholesterol made in the liver is joined with protein, making a lipoprotein. This lipoprotein then moves the cholesterol through the bloodstream.1 Low-density lipoprotein (LDL or "bad" cholesterol), high-density lipoprotein (HDL or "good" cholesterol), along with triglycerides and Lp(a) cholesterol, make up your total cholesterol count, which can be determined through a blood test.2
Fast Facts:
- The lipoproteins to focus on are low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and high-density lipoprotein (HDL).
- When too much LDL, "bad" cholesterol circulates in the blood, it can slowly build up on the inner walls of the arteries that feed the heart and brain.3
- HDL cholesterol is considered "good" cholesterol because a high HDL level seems to protect against heart attack.
- Triglycerides combine with cholesterol and protein to make lipoproteins.4
- Lp(a) cholesterol is a genetic form of LDL "bad" cholesterol and having a high level is a risk factor for developing atherosclerosis.5
