Research Notes on Cholesterol and Heart Disease
Too much cholesterol in the body can put you at risk for developing heart disease.1 Although cholesterol is produced naturally by the liver, it also enters your body through food. That excess amount of cholesterol builds up in the walls of your arteries causing blood flow to the heart to slow or be reduced.1 It is important to be aware of your cholesterol levels to reduce the risk of developing heart disease.
Fast Facts:
- Eating a heart healthy diet and maintaining a healthy weight are key in keeping cholesterol levels low.2
- Factors such as family history, whether you smoke or not, and age also play into whether you are at a high risk for developing heart disease.2
- Your doctor may prescribe a cholesterol lowering medicine to reduce your risk of heart disease.2
