Research Notes on Cholesterol Profile in Type 2 Diabetes
Because type 2 diabetics are already at higher risk for developing coronary heart disease it is important for them to understand and monitor their blood lipids, particularly their cholesterol levels. Diabetics often have HDL (or “good” cholesterol) levels that are too low and triglyceride levels that are too high.1 Additionally, their LDL (or “bad” cholesterol) are smaller and more dense and this type of particle is more harmful to the arteries.1 Diet and exercise can help keep the LDL and HDL levels in good balance. However, sometimes cholesterol-lowering drugs (such as statins) must be prescribed.
Fast Facts:
- The American Diabetes Association (ADA) recommends an annual check of your blood lipids although some patients may require more frequent checking.1
- Your physician may order a fasting cholesterol test or lipid profile which will determine the levels of total cholesterol and triglycerides in your blood as well as the levels of LDL cholesterol and HDL cholesterol.2 3
- The lipid profile test is sometimes also called a lipid panel or coronary risk panel.3
- A recent study demonstrated that there was little downside to aggressively lowering diabetics’ LDL cholesterol using statins.4
