Research Notes on Cholestyramine
Cholestyramine is used to reduce high cholesterol levels in the blood, which may help prevent medical conditions caused by cholesterol clogging the blood vessels.1 Additionally, since some liver problems result in too much bile acid in the body, which can cause severe itching, it is used to remove such bile acids.1
Fast Facts:
- Sold under the brands Locholest and Questran.
- Medicine is dosed in either tablet or powder form.1
- Take this medicine as directed by your doctor, being cautious not to miss a dose.
- A healthy, desirable total cholesterol level is less than 200 mg/dL.2
- 200–239 mg/dL is considered borderline high risk, whereas 240 mg/dL and above are a very high risk.2
