Research Notes on Cholesterol Absorption Inhibitors
Inhibiting cholesterol absorption in the intestines is an effective means of lowering plasma cholesterol for many patients. This can help those who have elevated LDL cholesterol and are at risk for developing coronary heart disease. Cholesterol in the intestines comes from animal-derived food or from within the body itself as excreted in the bile. Some soluble fiber-rich foods, such as oatmeal or oat bran, can bind cholesterol and inhibit its absorption. Many plant sterols or phytosterols can also have this beneficial effect. There is a prescription medicine called Zetia or Ezetrol (brand names for ezetimibe) which also inhibits cholesterol absorption and can lower LDL cholesterol.1
Fast Facts:
- Ezetimibe can be used alone or in combination with statins to provide a more significant drop in LDL cholesterol.
- Vytorin is a single combination medication containing ezetimibe and a specific statin (simvastatin) which lowers LDL cholesterol by two means - inhibition of cholesterol absorption and inhibition of cholesterol biosynthesis within the body.
- There are many nutriceutical or over-the-counter products sold as cholesterol-lowering substances, with some advertised as cholesterol absorption inhibitors.2 3 4
- A number of clinical trials are completed or ongoing that are examining the effects of plant sterols on LDL cholesterol levels.5
- Besides their cholesterol-lowering properties, plant sterols may also exert anti-cancer, anti-atherosclerosis, anti-inflammation, and anti-oxidation activities.6
