Research Notes on Cholestasis


Cholestasis is a symptom in which there is a reduction of bile from the liver. There are many causes of cholestasis. Acute hepatitis, primary biliary cirrhosis with inflammation and scarring of the bile ducts, and alcoholic liver disease can cause cholestasis within the liver. High amounts of pregnancy hormones can cause cholestasis of pregnancy. Cancer of a bile duct, or cancer of the pancreas can cause cholestasis outside the liver.
