Cholangitis is due to an inflammatory process in the bile duct. There may be an undelying bile duct tumor, a stone with chronic infection or an autoimmune cholangitis, called primary sclerosing cholangitis. This is a genetic condition and this can eventually lead to liver cirrhosis. It is often found in young men and may be associated with ulcerative colitis. Symptoms are fatigue, itchy skin or jaundice. A gastroenterologist is needed to do an ERCP and other investigations. End stage cases may require a liver transplant.
