Research Notes on Children and Hypertension
Though there are many children with higher than normal blood pressure, less than one percent have true hypertension. Hypertension in children is usually a symptom of another disorder, such as kidney disease or heart disease. Hypertension in children is generally easy to control, and rarely causes any serious problems when treated properly.1
Fast Facts:
- Overweight children tend to have higher blood pressure.2
- Secondary hypertension is usually the cause of high blood pressure in children under the age of 10.3
- Children with untreated hypertension are more likely to have hypertension as an adult.3
