Research Notes on Children and Cholesterol Treatment
The best treatment for high cholesterol in children is to consume a healthy diet and get plenty of exercise.1 Medication to treat high cholesterol may be prescribed in children over eight years of age with LDL cholesterol levels of 190 or higher. It is recommended that children who are at risk for developing high cholesterol start getting tested between two and ten years of age.2

- Children aged two through eighteen should have a total cholesterol reading of less than 170 mg/dL.2
- High cholesterol increases the risk for coronary artery disease and heart attack.1
- High cholesterol can be hereditary.3
