Research Notes on Children Taking ADHD Drugs Score Better on Tests
A study performed by the University of California, Berkeley, showed positive results with higher academic scores from children who are taking medication for attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Children who are diagnosed with ADHD have problems with concentration, impulsivity, and hyperactivity. The five year study sampled almost six-hundred children from kindergarten to fifth grade who were diagnosed with ADHD.1 It concluded that approximately sixty percent of the children taking ADHD medications performed better on standardized testing.2

- Approximately 56 percent of children diagnosed with ADHD are prescribed medications. An estimated 4.4 million children are diagnosed with ADHD.3
- Stimulants are the most common ADHD medication prescribed.3
- The American Academy of Pediatrics also suggests behavior therapy should be used in combination with ADHD medicine.4
- Results also showed that medicated children were scholastically ahead in both math and reading than non-medicated children.2
- ADHD is more prevalent in boys than girls.3
- Insomnia, appetite loss, and temporary hallucinations are some side effects of ADHD medication.1
