Chickenpox is so contagious in its early stages that an exposed person who has not had the disease has a 70 to 80 percent chance of getting it. After infection, the virus stays in the body for life. Up to 1 in 4 people who have been vaccinated will get chickenpox anyway.

Fast Facts:

  • Chickenpox is caused by the Varicella-Zoster Virus.
  • Chickenpox appears in a blister-like rash, itching, tiredness and fever.
  • The rash first appears on the trunk and face, but can spread over the entire body.
  • A person with chickenpox is contagious 1-2 days before the rash appears and until the blisters have formed scabs.
  • After exposure, it takes from 10-21 days for someone to develop chickenpox.
