Research Notes on Chest Physical Therapy
Chest physical therapy, also known as chest physiotherapy, is used to improve respiratory efficiency and assist in draining mucus from the lungs. It may be performed using various methods such as postural drainage, chest percussion, chest vibration, turning, breathing exercises, coughing, and incentive spirometry.1 A doctor will decide which type of chest physical therapy to order based on a person's overall condition and underlying disease.2
Fast Facts:
- Chest physical therapy is often used with other treatments such as suctioning, nebulizer treatments, and expectorant medications.1
- To prevent nausea or vomiting, chest physical therapy should be done at least one to two hours after eating.3
- Chest physical therapy may be used for various reasons such as cystic fibrosis, bronchiectasis, abscess, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), or after surgery if a patient is having difficulty taking deep breaths.2
