Research Notes on Chest Pain
One of the most common reasons people phone for medical help is chest pain. Emergency room doctors treat millions of people for chest pain each year. While chest pain should never go ingored, it is not always a signal that you are experiencing a heart attack or a cardiac event.1
Fast Facts:
- Chest pain should be evaluated by a physician right away. If you are experiencing severe pain, crushing, squeezing, or pressure that lasts more than a few minutes, contact 911 or local emergency responders immediately.2
- Examples of life-threatening causes of chest pain include: heart attack, angina, aortic dissection, pulmonary embolism, perforated viscus, cocaine-induced chest pain.3
- Examples of causes of chest pain that are not immediately life-threatening include the following: acute pericarditis, mitral valve prolapse, pneumonia, acid reflux, esophagitis, esophageal spasm, costochondritis.3
