Research Notes on Chemical Peel
A chemical peel -- also known as chemexfoliation or derma-peeling -- is a treatment used to improve the appearance of the skin.1 A solution is applied to the skin which causes the skin to blister and eventually peel.1 The new skin underneath is normally less wrinkled and smoother.2 It is used in the treatment of fine lines, light sun damage, light freckling, acne or acne scarring, and skin discoloration or age spots.1
Fast Facts:
- The chemicals generally used are phenol, trichloroacetic acid (TCA) and alphahydroxy acids (AHAs).3
- Chemical peels are also used to treat melasma (irregularly shaped patches of brown skin commonly found on the face and neck) and pre-cancerous changes in the skin.4
- Chemical peels are most commonly performed on the face, neck, chest, arms, hands, and legs.4
