Research Notes on Chalazia
Chalazion is a cyst in the eyelid.1 It is caused by a blocked meibomian gland and is usually on the upper eyelid.1 Unlike a stye, it is typically painless and is larger in size.1 While the chalazion will sometimes disappear on its own within a few months, treatment is sometimes necessary.1
Fast Facts:
- Symptoms include a swelling on the eyelid, sensitivity to light, increased tearing and eyelid tenderness.2
- Treatment options include warm compresses applied 10-15 minutes at least four times a day and surgical removal in some cases.2
- Large chalazions can lead to astigmatism, but the issue should resolve itself when the chalazion is gone.2
- Cleaning the eyelash area with baby shampoo may reduce the likelihood recurrence.2
