Research Notes on Chagas Disease

Chagas disease is an illness caused by a parasite called Trypanosoma cruzi, related to the African trypanosome that causes sleeping sickness. It is spread by reduvid bugs and is one of the major health problems in South America, where 20 million people are infected. Due to immigration, approximately 500,000 people in the United States are believed to be infected.

  • Chagas is pronounced SHA-gus.
  • Named after the Brazilian physician Carlos Chagas, who discovered it in 1909.
  • It is estimated that 8 to 11 million people in Mexico, Central, and South American have Chagas disease, most of them do not realize they are infected.
  • In Chagas-endemic areas, the main way Chagas is transmitted through insect vector called triatomine bugs.
  • Other ways of becoming infected are: uncooked food contaminated with feces from infected bug, congenital transmission, blood transfusion, organ transplantation and accidental laboratory exposure.
