Research Notes on Cervical Cancer Early Symptoms


Cervical cancer is cancer of the cervix or cervical area. You cannot see or feel early signs of cervical cancer. Only your health-care provider can with pelvic exams and Pap tests.1 The first identifiable signs and symptoms of cervical cancer are likely to include watery or bloody vaginal discharge, occasionally heavy and foul-smelling, vaginal bleeding after intercourse, between your menstrual periods, or after menopause, and menstrual periods may be heavier and last longer than normal. 2

  • Getting a Pap smear every year is important.3
  • Signs and symptoms of cervical cancer will usually not be apparent until abnormal cervical cells become cancerous.2
  • It is important to note that pain is not an early symptom of cervical cancer.4
