Research Notes on Cerebrospinal Fluid
Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is a clear bodily fluid that occupies the subarachnoid space and the ventricular system around and inside of the brain. Essentially, the brain "floats" in it and it acts as a "cushion" or buffer for the cortex, providing a basic mechanical and immunological protection to the brain inside the skull.1 CSF helps support the brain, acts as a lubricant, maintains pressure in the skull, and cushions shocks.2
Fast Facts:
- The cerebrospinal fluid is produced at a rate of 500 ml/day.1
- Normal CSF pressure is 100-200 mm of water.3
- The circulation of CSF leads to the fluid being completely replaced about every 4 hours.2
