Research Notes on Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
"The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), a part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, is the primary Federal agency for conducting and supporting public health activities in the United States."1 Plus, they are the guardians, in many ways, of the public health. "The CDC has one of the few Bio-Safety Level 4 laboratories in the country, as well as one of only two "official" repositories of smallpox in the world. The second smallpox store reside at the State Research Center of Virology and Biotechnology VECTOR in the Russian Federation, though it is possible that other countries may have obtained samples during the collapse of the Soviet Union."2
Fast Facts:
- The CDC is part of a world wide disease monitoring effort.3
- HealthMap and EpiSPIDER help to visualize the world wide spread of disease.4
- Level 4 containment is where the most dangerous diseases in the world are contained, such as Ebola and Hantavirus5
