This WisdomCard managed by: Tara Salamone

A cavity is a hole in a tooth. Cavities develop when a tooth starts to decay. When plaque is allowed to build up on a tooth, it allows acids caused by bacteria in the mouth to eat away at the enamel. Left untreated the cavity will become larger and the tooth can develop an abscess.1

Fast Facts:

  • -- Dental cavities may also be called caries.1
  • -- Brushing, flossing, limiting sweets and regular visits to the dentist can help to prevent cavities.1
  • -- Depending on the location, a cavity may not cause pain early on.2
