Research Notes on Cauterization
Cauterization is the destruction of human tissue.1 In medical terms, it is a procedure where flesh is burned, either to remove part of the body or to stop bleeding. Cauterization has been used for thousands of years, originally done by using a brand heated over a fire to close wounds. Advances in technology have allowed the procedure to become much more advanced, and now cauterization can be done with electrical instruments or even chemicals.2
Fast Facts:
- Cauterization not only seals wounds, but also effectively kills bacteria around wounds.3
- In the past, cauterization was used to stop heavy bleeding, for example after an amputation.3
- Electrocautery can be used to remove tissue, seal blood vessels, or to create surgical incisions.3
- Electrocuatery is preferred over chemical cauterization because it allows the doctor to be more accurate with the surface that is cauterized.2
