Research Notes on Pregnancy Drug Category D


Medications classified by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration as Pregnancy Drug Category D should not be taken during pregnancy.1 Drugs in this category have been shown to cause birth defects.2 These drugs are only prescribed if your doctor determines the benefits outweigh the risks.1

Fast Facts:

  • The FDA began classifying drugs based on the risks they posed to fetuses in 1979.2
  • Drugs in Pregnancy Drug Category D may put you at a greater risk of having a miscarriage.3
  • The other four categories are A, B, C, and X.2
