Research Notes on Catatonia

Catatonia is characterized by the state of immobility and unresponsiveness while awake. The statuesque posturing or abnormal purposeless movement is caused by a disturbance of the motor behavior - either psychological or neurological. Mental illness, severe depression, schizophrenia, delirium, drugs (both prescribed and recreational) and hysteria are the most common causes of catatonia.

Fast Facts:

  • Karl Kahlbaum first described catatonia in 1874
  • Associated more with schizophrenia than mood disorders
  • Antipsychotics are a first line of treatment
  • Common signs: stupor, posturing, cerea flexibilitas (waxy flexibility), echopraxia (involuntarily mimicking another person), aversion and excitement
