Research Notes on Castration

Castration is any action (intentional, unintentional, surgical, chemical, torture method, etc.) that causes a male to lose the function of his testes.1 The term is most commonly used to refer to the removal of the testes. Removal of, or damage to, the testes prevents the male from producing the hormone testosterone.2 Castration may also be used on male animals, to prevent or decrease aggressive behavior by removing the animal's ability to produce testosterone.3

Fast Facts:

  • In animal cases, castration may also be referred to as: gelding, fixing, or neutering.1
  • Testicular cancer is generally treated by surgical castration.1
  • In ancient warfare, castration was a form of punishment for defeated enemies.1
  • Castration that occurs before puberty results in a smaller body frame, less body hair, and higher pitched voice in the boy's adulthood.2
  • Some courts have ordered sexual offenders to chemical castration to prevent future assaults.2
