Research Notes on Caroli Disease
Caroli disease is a rare and inherited disorder, which is characterized by the abnormal dilatation of the ducts that carry bile from the liver.1 The isolated or simple form is of the disorder is characterized by widening of the bile ducts, whereas the more complex form, known as Caroli syndrome is associated with congenital hepatic fibrosis and portal hypertension.1

- Gastroenterologist Jacques Caroli first described a rare congenital condition in 1958.2
- Symptoms include abdominal pain and fever.
- Found typically in Asia, Caroli disease is generally diagnosed in children under the age of 22.2
