Research Notes on Care of Uncircumcised Penis

The penis consists of two parts - the shaft and the glans. The glans is the tip of the penis, while the shaft is the main part of the penis. All boys are born with a foreskin, or a covering over the tip of the penis. Some boys are circumcised, while others are not. In an uncircumcised boy, the foreskin will begin to separate from the glans, or the tip of the penis. This happens naturally while the male is an infant.1

Fast Facts:

  • Circumcision isn't a necessary medical procedure.2
  • An infant boy with an uncircumcised penis requires no special care. Normal bathing is enough to keep it clean. It is not recommended to pull back the foreskin for cleaning during infancy and childhood.3
  • When a boy reaches puberty, he needs to clean under his foreskin daily.4
