Research Notes on Cardizem and Pregnancy
Cardizem, a calcium channel blocker, should only be used during pregnancy when the benefits to the mother clearly outweigh potential risks to the fetus. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has listed Cardizem as a category C medication, meaning that there have been no well controlled studies in pregnant women, but animal studies have shown a potential for birth defects. Cardizem is known to pass through the breast milk of breastfeeding mothers, and should not be used if the mother is nursing her baby.1
Fast Facts:
- Animal studies have shown an increased risk of miscarriage and skeletal malformations in the fetus when the pregnant animal was exposed to Cardizem.2
- Should you conceive or wish to become pregnant while using Cardizem, discuss the matter with your physician before stopping your medication.2
- Cardizem is a brand name of the generic medication diltiazem which is sometimes recommended in the treatment of conditions such as angina, hypertension, and arrhythmia.3
